12.9 billion dollars were spent on cosmetic procedures in the United States in 2014, which is an increase of 2% over 2013.
The top five cosmetic procedures are breast augmentation, nose reshaping or rhinoplasty, liposuction, eyelid surgery and facelifts. Breast augmentation remains the leading procedure since 2006. Silicone implants now compose 77% of all primary breast augmentations and saline 23% in 2014.
The top five non-surgical or non-invasive procedures are Botox, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasions. Botox injections increased 6% in 2014, with over 67 million injections!
Female patients make up 92% of all cosmetic procedures and male patients 8%, but male cosmetic procedures are continuing to increase every year. 50% of all cosmetic patients are repeat patients. Patients 40-54 years old make up the majority of cosmetic procedures – 49% of the total. Most surgical procedures now are performed in in-office surgery centers as opposed to hospitals or out-patient surgery centers.
Major complication rates for aesthetic procedures is very low at 1.9%. Male vs. female patient complications rates were similar except for post-operative hematomas in make facelift patients. Increasing BMI steadily increases complication rates as does smoking.
